Twelve Years of Scrobbles

I started using Last.fm in January 2007 to “scrobble” my music plays, that is, keep track of the number of times I play each track, each album, and each artist. Since then, my total scrobbles have just exceeded 300,000. I’ve listened to 40,256 total unique tracks during that time; 16,671 unique albums; and 6,438 unique artists. I’ve “loved” 4,216 unique tracks. On average, I’ve scrobbled 67 plays of tracks every day since 2007.

What have I listened to the most over the past 12 years? Female vocalists, primarily pop. The stats don’t lie. Here are my top 8 artists since 2007.

Pictured are: Rihanna, Fefe Dobson, Lana Del Rey, Marina & the Diamonds, The Pretty Reckless, The Ting Tings, Demi Lovato, and Mandy Moore.

Pictured are: Sunday Love by Fefe Dobson, Light Me Up by The Pretty Reckless, Electra Heart by Marina & the Diamonds, We Started Nothing by The Ting Tings, The Family Jewels by Marina & the Diamonds, Art Angels by Grimes, The Fame by Lady Gaga, and Froot by Marina & the Diamonds. By the way, Marina & the Diamonds is changing her name to Marina, which will effect how many scrobbles are truly associated with her, unless Last.fm does some trick to associate the act with the name “Marina” to the act with the name “Marina & the Diamonds”.

Pictured here are songs by Demi Lovato, Rihanna, Grimes, Fefe Dobson, Lana Del Rey, Grace VanderWaal, The Pretty Reckless, Miley Cyrus, The Ting Tings, Meg Myers, Kimbra, Kid Sister, Marina & the Diamonds, and Cher Lloyd. It’s a mix of older and more recent songs, as the picture shows.

The thing about Last.fm is that it shows you what you’re actually playing, as opposed to what degree you think you like one song over another. I consider Heart my all-time favorite music group, but they don’t show up in my top 8 artists, because I just don’t play them as often now as I did in my younger days, before I started using Last.fm. If I’d had Last.fm stats going all the way back to when I first started listening to the music of commercial acts, Heart would give Rihanna a run for the top spot. So let’s end this post with a little tribute to Heart, a video of what I consider my all-time favorite song, despite what Last.fm says. Thanks for reading!
