Spotlight on Retro Japanese Music, Pt. I: Pop

Golden Age JPop: Late 60s to Late 70s

Candies

Candies is one of the more popular Golden Age Jpop groups. Honestly, I don’t know much about them, but I’ve always enjoyed their music when it comes on my playlist. There’s a lot of disco from Japan that’s very slow—this isn’t.

With Candies, you can hear the roots of Silver Age Jpop in the making. That’s even more the case with Pink Lady, who may be a bit more popular than Candies.

Pink Lady

I had a huge Pink Lady phase a year ago. A lot of their songs are cute, sexy, and have a certain charm to them. They are too happy for what seemed to be kind of a sad era for music. Even upbeat groups didn’t have Pink Lady’s charm.

Some of my favorite songs are Pepper Keibu, Southpaw, SOS, UFO, and Kiss in The Dark.

Pink Lady’s first record is also the only Japanese pop record I actually own on vinyl. I suppose that says something.
